Rabat – Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy is scheduled for surgery this coming Monday, following an injury to the rectus femoris tendon in his right leg sustained early in the match against Espanyol on May 3.
The Frenchman was forced off the pitch just 10 minutes into the match, with his visible distress immediately signaling a serious injury.
According to Marca, the surgery will take place in France after Real Madrid decided to proceed with French specialists, despite initially considering Finland where teammate Éder Militão was successfully treated recently.
The 30-year-old is expected to be sidelined for approximately five months, signaling a long recovery process before he can return to full training and competition. If his rehabilitation goes as planned, the defender should return to the pitch in October.
But the Madrid medical staff remain cautious due to the player’s history of muscle issues, as any complications during rehabilitation could further delay his return.
Mendy is under contract with Real Madrid until June 30, 2028, and this latest injury practically guarantees his place for the 2026-27 season since the club maintains a policy of honoring the contracts of injured players.
The club values the fact that Mendy has risked his health for the team on several occasions. Marca reports that they intend to take this loyalty into account, even though his performance has been affected by recurring injuries in recent years.
The 30-year-old has been limited to just nine appearances this season, clocking only 448 minutes of playing time.
Following an injury in the Copa del Rey final, he remained sidelined for Xabi Alonso until late November, when he finally made his return during a Champions League fixture in Athens.
Mendy’s five-month absence leaves a major hole in the defense just as the Clásico against Barcelona approaches.
The upcoming clash will be a test of squad depth as Real Madrid seeks defensive solutions for the season’s biggest match.
