Rabat – Moroccan international Ilias Akhomach has suffered a quadriceps muscle injury during a pre-match warm-up, forcing him to be sidelined for the fixture against Strasbourg.
Rayo Vallecano head coach Iñigo Pérez confirmed during a press conference that the young winger has been psychologically affected by the setback, citing Akhomach’s intense desire to contribute to the team.
The Spanish coach stated, “Ilias suffered a muscle injury in his anterior thigh. He is deeply affected because he was very enthusiastic about playing. In fact, he had recently been playing through significant pain in his ankle just to remain available.”
This injury comes at a particularly frustrating time for Akhomach, who joined Rayo Vallecano on loan from Villarreal CF in January 2026. The move was designed to provide the former Barcelona academy graduate with consistent playing time following a contract extension with Villarreal CF through 2028.
Akhomach’s recent rise has been meteoric, after representing the Atlas Lions at the 2024 Paris Olympics and being part of the historic squad that secured the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, his development remains a priority for both club and country.
