Meknes – Jude Bellingham has defended England’s performance against public criticism from manager Thomas Tuchel. The midfielder’s defiant stance follows his two-goal masterclass against Norway, which booked the Three Lions a ticket into the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final.
Following England’s hard-fought 2–1 quarter-final victory over Norway, the German tactician was quick to point out the flaws in the team’s performance.
“The result is fantastic, we are in the last four, it’s amazing, but I’m not happy with the performance,” Tuchel told English television.
“In every sense. Again the commitment is there but we made life very very difficult for ourselves in the way we played, how we played: sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough, not repetitive enough. We were lucky today,” he added.
Those critical comments did not sit well with Bellingham, who felt the team’s grueling effort deserved praise rather than blame. He wasted no time in hitting back, directly challenging the manager’s understanding of the match.
“It’s difficult out there. It’s a tough shift. All the players have put in a tough shift, so my thoughts and appreciation goes to the players who were out there and put in a great shift yet again,” Bellingham said.
The 120-minute match was played under punishing conditions in Miami, where humidity levels topped 60% and the heat index approached 40 degrees.
“Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kinds of conditions against Erling Haaland, Odegaard, Nusa, Sorloth. That’s not an easy team to play against,” the Real Madrid player explained.
Bellingham then pointed out that winning at the highest level isn’t always about style. He defended England’s pragmatic approach, explaining that grit is often what matters most in football.
“I think we’ve tried to create a positive environment. You’re not going to win every game, popping the ball and making a thousand passes. Sometimes you have to win dirty, and we’ve done that again tonight.”
England now moves on to the semi-finals, where they face their biggest test yet against Argentina. Tuchel’s men will square off at the Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, as they look to book their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
