Rabat – James Rodríguez is officially ending his tenure with Minnesota United next week. The Athletic reported that the Colombian Midfielder will not be heading back to the MLS side once the World Cup concludes.
James’ time in Minnesota is nearing its end, as the 34-year-old prepares to join the Colombian squad following the club’s Wednesday match.
The Colombian player joined Minnesota United as a free agent in February 2026, following his stint with Mexico’s Club León, signing a short-term deal intended to maintain his match fitness ahead of Colombia’s World Cup campaign.
Since joining, Rodríguez has recorded six appearances for Minnesota United, totaling just 183 minutes of play primarily through brief substitute appearances.
James’ current contract ends on June 30, and the club has until June 1 to decide on an extension for the rest of the year. However, Minnesota United has chosen not to trigger this option, preferring to respect James’ desire to move on.
According to reports from AS Colombia, the former Real Madrid playmaker is considering retiring from professional football following the conclusion of the World Cup.
James participated in both of Colombia’s games during the recent international window and remains a central figure for the national team heading into the World Cup.
Even with his limited time on the pitch, club insiders at Minnesota praised the veteran as a consummate professional during his brief tenure at the MLS.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 11, and will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, marking the first time the tournament has featured three host nations and an expanded field of 48 teams.
