Casablanca — Morocco has officially expressed interest in joining the governance of TV5MONDE, marking a new step in the broadcaster’s expansion toward African member states.

In a letter sent on April 21, 2026, to the Swiss presidency representing TV5MONDE’s funding governments, Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid confirmed the country’s intention to enter the partnership. Morocco is now the first African country to formally begin the accession process.

Founded in 1984, TV5MONDE is currently distributed in nearly 200 countries and territories and describes itself as the world’s leading French-language audiovisual network and an operator of the Francophonie.

The move follows an initiative launched in 2025 by the network’s six funding governments to open TV5MONDE’s governance to additional states from the African continent that are members of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.

In his letter, Bensaid said Morocco’s commitment to meeting the membership criteria stems from “a convergence of values” and a shared concern for transparency and good governance.

The next stage of the process will involve discussions between Moroccan officials and representatives of the six funding governments on the practical arrangements and conditions of Morocco’s possible accession.

The six current funding governments are Canada, Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, France, Monaco, Quebec, and Switzerland.

TV5MONDE will also work with Morocco’s public broadcaster Société nationale de radiodiffusion et de télévision (SNRT), represented by Faïçal Laraïchi, on co-productions and content distribution across the network’s 10 linear channels and on its streaming platform TV5MONDE+.

The broadcaster said the accession path includes strict eligibility requirements. Candidate states must commit to respecting TV5MONDE’s core values and editorial independence under the TV5 Charter and the Charter of Editorial Independence and Ethics, which set principles related to journalistic rigor, transparency, honesty of information, and pluralism of opinions.

TV5MONDE says its 10 channels reach more than 400 million households worldwide. Its content is subtitled in 12 languages, while its streaming platform TV5MONDE+ is available in 200 countries and territories.
