The Moroccan U-17 national football team kicked off their 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Tunisia on Wednesday evening in Rabat.
Following the match, Morocco’s head coach, Tiago Lima Pereira, highlighted the mental strength of his young players. He noted that their spirited performance in the second half proved they have the personality to handle high-pressure situations.
Coach Pereira explained that while the Atlas Cubs were eager to impress the home crowd from the start, many were playing on such a large stage for the very first time. The atmosphere of a massive stadium and the weight of local expectations led to a cautious start.
However, Pereira is already looking forward, noting that since every team in the group also drew their opening matches, the race remains wide open. The team’s focus has now shifted entirely to their upcoming clash with Ethiopia.
Meanwhile, Tunisian coach Abdelrazzak Hedider described the match as a “classic derby” filled with intensity. Tunisia managed to take an early lead thanks to tactical preparations, but Hedider admitted that Morocco’s relentless attacking pressure in the second half made it impossible for his team to maintain their lead. He also took a moment to commend Morocco for the excellent organization of the tournament.
What’s next?
Group A remains perfectly balanced after Ethiopia and Egypt also played out a 0-0 draw.
The Atlas Cubs are scheduled to face Ethiopia this Saturday at 8:00 PM. The match will take place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Sale, where the young players will do their best to secure their first three points of the competition.
