Rabat – Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has included Neymar in his 26‑man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending weeks of speculation over the forward’s fitness.
The 34‑year‑old Santos star, Brazil’s all‑time top scorer with 79 goals, returns to the national team after recovering from a torn ACL suffered in October 2023.
His selection comes despite doubts raised by analysts and former players about whether he would be ready for the tournament.

Ancelotti, who took charge of Brazil in May 2025, had not called Neymar in previous squads. Announcing the list in Rio, he defended the choice, pointing to the veteran’s progress and influence.
“He has improved his fitness,” Ancelotti said. “He will be important in this World Cup. He has experience, the love of the group, and he can help in different ways, whether for one minute, five minutes, or 90.”
The Italian coach stressed that Neymar’s role would depend on the match situation but insisted his presence could lift the team’s environment.
While Neymar grabbed headlines, the announcement brought disappointment for others.
Joao Pedro of Chelsea and Antony of Real Betis were left out, missing the chance to play on the biggest stage.
Instead, young forwards Endrick and Rayan earned their first World Cup call‑ups, reflecting Ancelotti’s preference for fresh energy in attack.
“I tried to give my best at all times. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to fulfill this dream of representing my country in a World Cup,” Pedro wrote on Instagram.
“Joys and frustrations are part of football. From now on, I wish good luck to everyone who is there and I will be just another fan cheering for them to bring the sixth title home.”
Brazil enter the tournament with a mix of experience and youth. Neymar’s inclusion adds star power and leadership, while the new generation will look to prove themselves.
Brazil will begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco in New Jersey on June 13 before also facing Haiti and Scotland in the group stage.
However, before competing in the event, they will first play two warm-up matches, against Panama and Egypt.
