Moroccan skater Lina Hilali made history on May 17 after qualifying for the final of the Roller Figure Skating World Cup, set to take place in Cesena, Italy, from June 1 to June 7. She is now the first Moroccan athlete ever to reach this stage in the sport.
The 16-year-old secured her place in the final after an impressive performance during the semifinal competition held recently in Germany. Hilali competed in the Youth Solo Dance category and earned the chance to represent both Morocco and Africa at the international event.
Officially to the final
According to her mother, Hanan Datssi, the qualification was officially confirmed by the International Roller Sports Federation. Datssi described her daughter’s achievement as an important moment for the development of Artistic Roller Skating in Morocco and a sign of the growing African presence in the sport.
The upcoming World Cup finals in Italy will bring together top skaters from around the world. Lina Hilali’s qualification arrives as a welcome validation of the progress made by young Moroccan talents in emerging sports.
Representing the Moroccan flag
Hilali currently lives in Dijon, France, where she continues her training under the guidance of her coach Alia Hilali. Despite living abroad, she continues to compete under the Moroccan flag in a sport that is still not widely practiced across Africa.
Before reaching the final, the Moroccan skater represented the kingdom during the second stage of the Artistic World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, where athletes from around 30 countries took part. Her strong display there helped her book a place in the world final in Italy.
