Rabat – Following a trophyless campaign, Álvaro Arbeloa confirmed today his imminent departure from the Santiago Bernabéu dugout, denying the rumors that he would be staying on under potential successor José Mourinho.
Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Arbeloa confirmed that the clash with Athletic Bilbao, this Saturday, will indeed be his final match in charge of the Real Madrid squad. His exit comes as little surprise to observers. After stepping up from the reserve team to replace Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa was ultimately unable to guide the club to silverware this season.
He indicated he will begin evaluating his future and next professional steps this coming Monday, while expressing a desire to return to the club in the future. However, he firmly dismissed rumors of joining the backroom staff of Jose Mourinho, who is reportedly close to taking over the Spanish side next week.
The tactician expressed his profound thanks to the club for the opportunity and stated he is eager to take on new challenges in his coaching career, adding that his focus now is on enjoying his final game on the bench, with hopes of bowing out with a perfect, winning finish.
Arbeloa closed his remarks on an emotional note, stressing: “I hope that this farewell is just a ‘see you later’ remark, as I have always considered Real Madrid my home after spending two decades here.”
