Rabat – The Mauritania national team has chosen Casablanca to hold a preparatory training camp ahead of two friendly matches.
During their stay in Morocco’s economic capital, the Mauritanian squad will face Niger on June 5, followed by a match against Liberia on June 9.
This decision shows the high quality of sports facilities and stadiums available in Morocco, with the kingdom having welcomed teams from across the continent. Over the years, Morocco has cemented its important stature as a premier football hub on both the African and global stage.
The Mauritania national football team, traditionally known as Al-Murabitun, has undergone one of the most remarkable transformations in modern African football. Al-Murabitun hit a historic low, sinking to 206th in the FIFA World Rankings, which placed them among the bottom five football nations worldwide.
Following deep structural overhauls, major investments in youth academies, and long-term planning by the Mauritanian Football Federation (FFRIM), they engineered a massive turnaround. The team went from continental underdogs to consistent competitors, successfully qualifying for three consecutive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments in 2019, 2021, and 2023.
