Casablanca — Royal Air Maroc has confirmed it will operate flights between Casablanca and Rio de Janeiro starting in 2027, marking the airline’s return to the Brazilian city after more than three decades.

The announcement was made on Sunday night during a press trip to Morocco organized at the airline’s invitation. The company also said it will expand its Casablanca São Paulo route from four to five weekly flights by the end of 2026.

Royal Air Maroc previously operated flights to RioGaleão International Airport in Rio de Janeiro until the early 1990s, when the route was discontinued. The airline later resumed operations in Brazil in 2013, but through São Paulo instead of Rio.

That Casablanca São Paulo route was suspended again in 2020 because of the Covid 19 pandemic. Flights resumed in 2024 with three weekly frequencies, before increasing to four in December 2025.

The planned Rio de Janeiro route had already been mentioned in April by Royal Air Maroc’s regional director for Latin America, Othman Baba, during the WTM Latin America trade fair. At the time, Baba told ANBA that the airline intended to expand its operations in Brazil and launch flights to Rio de Janeiro.

He also said Royal Air Maroc first needed to increase the number of flights to São Paulo, describing the city as the “heart” of the airline’s operations in Brazil.

Flights to Brazil are operated with the Boeing 787, one of the most modern aircraft currently in service. Baba said the average occupancy rate on the route is 80%, with leisure travelers making up 90% of passengers.
