Meknes – Luka Modric has joined Florentino Perez’s campaign for the upcoming Real Madrid presidential election, after sharing an Instagram photo of himself embracing Perez at the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.
The 40-year-old midfielder added two white hearts to the image to show his support for his former president.
With this endorsement, Pérez continues to gather backing ahead of the June 7 election against challenger Enrique Riquelme.
Modrić’s post adds to a growing wave of support from several prominent Real Madrid figures. Recently, Karim Benzema, Lucas Vázquez, Casemiro, and Pepe have all publicly expressed their backing for the president.
During a campaign event last Wednesday, club legends Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo Nazário also voiced their support for Pérez, saying, “President, you’re the best, and you’ll always be the best!”
This race marks the first time in 20 years that Real Madrid club members will actually cast votes for the presidency, as Florentino Pérez has run completely unopposed since returning to office in 2009. The sudden election was called following a difficult, trophy-less season for the club’s football team.
Challenger Enrique Riquelme, a 37-year-old renewable energy businessman, is running on a platform to bring more Spanish players into the squad. His goal is to make Real Madrid a primary provider of talent for the Spanish national team.
Pérez’s campaign has also received significant backing from the basketball world, drawing endorsements from Real Madrid basketball figures like Luka Dončić, Hugo González, Vincent Poirier, Fabien Causeur, and Felipe Reyes.
