Rabat – The Moroccan government has set the total amount of state funding for political parties participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections at MAD 450 million ($45 million).
According to a decision signed by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch and published in the latest issue of the Official Gazette, MAD 400 million will be allocated to political parties taking part in the general election for the House of Representatives, scheduled for September, 2026.
An additional MAD 50 million has been earmarked to support electoral lists presented by candidates aged 35 and under, provided they meet the legal requirements. The measure is intended to encourage greater participation of young people in the country’s political life.
The decision comes as Morocco prepares for the next legislative elections and is based on provisions contained in the country’s organic laws governing political parties and the House of Representatives. It also follows existing regulations that define how public funding is distributed to political parties during election campaigns.
In addition, the decision relies on a separate decree that sets the conditions and procedures for providing public financial support to electoral lists submitted by young candidates under the age threshold established by law.
The amount allocated for the 2026 elections marks a significant increase compared to the previous parliamentary elections held in 2021. At that time, the government had allocated MAD 160 million to help finance political parties’ election campaigns.
With the inclusion of the new youth-focused funding, total public support for the 2026 elections has increased by MAD 290 million compared to 2021. This represents a rise of more than 181%.
Public financing of election campaigns is intended to help political parties cover campaign expenses and ensure fair competition among participants. Morocco has long provided state funding for electoral campaigns, while recent reforms have also sought to encourage greater representation of young people and strengthen their involvement in elected institutions.Â
