Rabat — Morocco remains a key partner for security and stability in the Euro-Mediterranean region, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, said on Monday.
The statement came after the fifth meeting of the Frontex-Morocco Joint Committee, organized with Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior.
According to Frontex, Morocco is a reliable partner in the fight against cross-border crime, especially human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The agency said the drop in the number of irregular migrants reaching Europe through the West Africa route reflects Morocco’s efforts to strengthen border security and crack down on criminal networks.
During the meeting, officials reviewed the results of joint actions carried out by Morocco and Frontex. They also discussed recent developments linked to migration and border security and looked at ways to expand cooperation.
Both sides renewed their commitment to what they described as a humane and integrated approach to border management. They also stressed the need to continue working together to support regional security and stability.
Morocco has become an important partner for European countries on migration issues. Its location between Africa and Europe places it at the center of migration routes used by thousands of people trying to reach the continent.
In recent years, Moroccan authorities have stepped up operations against migrant smuggling and human trafficking networks. Security services regularly announce the dismantling of criminal groups involved in organizing illegal crossings by land and sea.
The country has also expanded cooperation with European partners through information sharing, joint coordination efforts, and border management programs.
The Frontex-Morocco Joint Committee is considered the main platform for cooperation between the two sides. Monday’s meeting gave officials a chance to assess progress and exchange views on the changing migration situation in the region.
Frontex said the committee remains a cornerstone of its long-standing partnership with Morocco.
At the end of the meeting, both sides expressed their willingness to further strengthen cooperation in the coming years. They agreed to continue dialogue and increase exchanges of expertise as they work on common migration and security challenges.
