Rabat –Â FIFA has introduced a new yellow card amnesty rule for the 2026 World Cup, easing concerns for teams and players as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
The new regulation will see all yellow cards accumulated during the group stage wiped out before the start of the knockout rounds. Where FIFA will apply a second amnesty period after the quarter-finals, ensuring that players are not suspended for the semi-finals or final because of bookings received in previous matches.
The decision comes as the 2026 World Cup expands from 32 to 48 teams, increasing the number of matches and the likelihood of players accumulating yellow cards throughout the competition.
The issue has become a major concern for coaches, who often face difficult decisions regarding players at risk of suspension which the managers must balance the need to field their strongest lineups while avoiding unnecessary bookings that could rule key players out of important knockout fixtures.
Several teams have already encountered this challenge. Ahead of the final round of group-stage matches, the United States and Portugal each had four players at risk of suspension, while the Netherlands had three.
The disciplinary records carry additional weight in this edition of the tournament, as FIFA’s conduct ranking system uses yellow and red cards as a tiebreaker when teams finish level on points.
By introducing the amnesty system, FIFA aims to reduce the impact of suspensions and ensure that the competition’s biggest matches feature the strongest possible lineups as teams pursue World Cup glory.
