Rabat – A significant share of Dutch fans will trade sleep for football as anticipation builds around the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash between Morocco and the Netherlands.
The fixture has sparked interest far beyond Moroccan supporters. Across Europe and North America, fans from the two sides prepare for an unusual viewing hour, determined to follow every moment despite the time difference.
A survey by Hart van Nederland, cited by local outlets, indicates that roughly one in three Dutch supporters plan to wake up at 3 a.m. local time to watch the match.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2 a.m. in Morocco. If the contest extends to extra time and penalties, the final whistle may come close to 6 a.m. in the Netherlands.
Such scheduling has raised concern among sleep experts, who advise fans to adjust their routines with care.
They recommend an earlier night, a short wake-up buffer before kickoff, and restraint when it comes to caffeine, alcohol, or heavy meals during the night. The same advice applies to Moroccan viewers who face a late kickoff at home.
The match carries clear sporting weight. Morocco, ranked sixth in the latest FIFA standings, seeks to build on its recent rise and extend the momentum that began in Qatar. The Netherlands, just behind in seventh place, approaches the tie with similar ambition and a clear objective to advance.
“We know what is at stake and we will give everything,” national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi said ahead of the match.
