Rabat – Some of the biggest matches at a World Cup are planned in advance. Others take shape as the tournament plays out.
A meeting between Portugal and Spain falls into the second category. If Portugal get past Croatia and Spain see off Austria in the Round of 32, the two Iberian rivals would meet in the last 16 in a fixture that could end up being one of the tournament’s best.
Both sides have looked sharp at times, though they’ve gone about it differently. Spain have leaned on their usual approach: patient possession, controlling games through sharp passing and movement off the ball. Portugal have blended technical quality with pace and attacking flair, which makes them a threat both on the break and when they have the ball themselves.
A game between these two sides would set up several tactical battles worth watching. Spain would try to control possession and slow the game to their tempo. Portugal would look to hit the gaps with quick attacks and moments of individual brilliance. A defensive slip, a flash of quality, or a well-timed tactical switch could easily decide it.
Then there’s the history. Matches between Portugal and Spain rarely lack edge. The two neighbors know each other well, and their meetings tend to carry something extra beyond the usual knockout stakes.
For now, though, neither side can think that far ahead. Croatia have made a habit of frustrating strong teams, and Austria have shown they can hang with Europe’s best. One bad night for either favorite, and this matchup never happens.
But if both get through, the World Cup could be about to serve up an Iberian derby that lives up to the stage, and one that fans will be tuning in for.
