Rabat – Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has been ranked among the most influential goalkeepers at the 2026 World Cup, following another strong tournament with the Atlas Lions.
Sports statistics outlet 365Scores placed Bounou sixth in its ranking of the 15 most influential goalkeepers at the tournament.
The ranking looked at goalkeepers whose saves, leadership and individual interventions helped their national teams reach advanced stages of the competition.
Bounou’s place in the list comes after Morocco reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the second consecutive edition.
Bounou has played 5 matches and 480 minutes for Morocco at the 2026 World Cup.
He has kept 2 clean sheets, conceded 4 goals, and made 9 saves.
His numbers do not tell the full story.
Morocco’s defensive organization has reduced the number of shots he has had to face, but Bounou has delivered in the biggest moments.
Against Canada in the round of 16, Tani Oluwaseyi forced a top save from Bounou in the 11th minute, which Team Canada described as the best chance of the first half. Morocco later won 3-0 to reach the quarterfinals.
Penalty hero against Netherlands
Bounou’s biggest moment of the tournament came against the Netherlands in the round of 32.
Morocco drew 1-1 with the Dutch after extra time before winning 3-2 on penalties.
BeIN Sports described Bounou as the hero of the shootout after he saved Crysencio Summerville’s penalty, allowing Ismael Saibari to score the decisive kick.
The same report noted that Bounou had already made an important save during the match, tipping away a powerful strike from Micky van de Ven.
That performance confirmed again why Bounou remains one of Morocco’s most trusted players in knockout football.
Bounou’s impact is not only about saves.
He brings calm to Morocco’s back line, guides defenders during pressure moments, and gives the team confidence in matches that can be decided by one mistake.
That experience has been crucial for Morocco, especially in knockout games.
The Atlas Lions have again built their World Cup run on defensive discipline, quick transitions, and strong leadership from senior players such as Bounou, Achraf Hakimi and Noussair Mazraoui.
Bounou was already one of the stars of Morocco’s 2022 World Cup run, especially after his penalty-shootout performance against Spain.
Four years later, he is again central to Morocco’s success.
Pickford tops the ranking
The 365Scores ranking was topped by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, while other names in the top positions included Paraguay’s Orlando Gill, Portugal’s Diogo Costa, Switzerland’s Gregor Kobel, and Spain’s Unai Simon.
Bounou came ahead of several major goalkeepers, including Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois.
For Morocco, the ranking is another sign of the importance of their goalkeeper before the quarterfinal against France.
The Atlas Lions will need another composed performance from Bounou as they chase a place in the World Cup semifinals.
His tournament so far has already been strong.
But if Morocco go further, Bounou’s influence could become even bigger.
