Agadir – Romanian Presidential Advisor Dacian Cioloș delivered a message from Romanian President Nicușor Dan to King Mohammed VI during a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita in Rabat on Monday.
Speaking to the press after the talks, Cioloș described Morocco as Romania’s “main partner in the MENA region,” hailing the two countries’ longstanding relationship.
He commended the “excellent cooperative and partnership ties on an equal footing” that Morocco and Romania have maintained for several decades across diplomatic, economic, and educational fields.
Cioloș, who is a candidate for the position of Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), also emphasized Morocco’s strategic importance within the Francophone community.
He said the country plays a “key role for Francophonie,” citing its close ties with French-speaking countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
The Romanian official called for a Francophonie that is better adapted to contemporary global changes and more responsive to the aspirations of younger generations.
He stressed the importance of French as “a language of opportunity” that facilitates access to employment and entrepreneurship while strengthening regional and international cooperation among French-speaking countries.
Cioloș also highlighted the cultural and linguistic bonds between Morocco and Romania, noting that their shared attachment to the French language has helped deepen bilateral relations over the years.
He recalled that Romania is among the most Francophone countries in Eastern Europe.
Addressing educational cooperation, Cioloș said more than 1,200 Moroccan students are currently studying in Romania, describing academic exchanges as an important contributor to strengthening ties between the two countries.
On the economic front, he pointed to “very significant” opportunities for expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in the automotive and construction sectors, where several Romanian companies have already invested in Morocco.
According to a statement from the ministry, the message also reaffirmed Romania’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the basis for resolving the Sahara issue.
In his message to King Mohammed VI, President Dan said Romania believes that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a viable solution” to the regional conflict.
The Romanian president further stated that his country “considers that the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 constitutes the most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis for reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.”
