The Italian Football Federation has approached Andrea Pirlo about taking charge of the national team for the next four years.
The former Italy midfielder is reportedly expected to become the national team’s new coach, with a contract running until the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“The Italian Federation approached Andrea Pirlo today over the head coach role for the next four years. He is now a clear favorite to take over as Italy’s new head coach,” sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reported.
Technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo confirmed at yesterday’s press conference that they had first approached their former Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti and then Pep Guardiola, but both declined the opportunity to lead the Italian national team.
Pirlo’s coaching record
Pirlo became the manager of Juventus Under-23 in 2020, before taking charge of the senior team just days later. Juventus went on to win the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles before Pirlo left in 2021.
He also took over Turkish side Fatih Karagümrük in 2022, where he spent one season before departing by mutual consent. In 2023, he was appointed head coach of Sampdoria in Italy’s Serie B, but his spell ended in 2024 after a disappointing run of results.
Despite a mixed start to his managerial career, Pirlo remains one of Italy’s most respected football figures due to his legendary and distinguished playing career.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the announcement could come before the end of the weekend.
