Agadir – Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on July 30 that it had suspended the acceptance of visa applications from Moroccan nationals, in response to Morocco’s decision to stop issuing visa confirmation letters to Taiwanese travelers.
In a statement, the ministry said it would “cease accepting visa applications from Moroccan nationals effective July 30 based on the principle of reciprocity in bilateral exchanges,” adding that “exceptions will only be made if special approval is given.”
According to MOFA, Morocco’s embassy in Japan informed Taiwanese travel agencies on July 23 that it would temporarily stop accepting applications for Visa Confirmation Letters (VCLs), which are required for Taiwanese citizens seeking to visit Morocco for short-term business or tourism purposes.
The ministry said subsequent inquiries confirmed that Moroccan authorities had instructed embassies and consulates worldwide to implement the same measure.
“Because Taiwanese nationals were not eligible for Moroccan e-visas, they could only travel to the country for short-term business or tourism activities by applying for VCLs at Moroccan embassies,” the ministry said.
It added that Morocco’s decision “will create new obstacles for Taiwanese nationals who intend to travel to Morocco, thereby negatively impacting bilateral exchanges.”
Taiwan clarified that citizens who obtained a VCL before July 20 will still be allowed to enter Morocco for business or tourism during the validity period of their visas.
In response, Taipei said it would no longer process visa applications from Moroccan nationals until further notice, while leaving the door open for exceptions through special approval.
The ministry urged Moroccan authorities to restore travel facilitation measures, calling on Rabat “to maintain convenient arrangements for business and tourism travel between Taiwan and Morocco and to resume regular people-to-people exchanges as soon as possible.”
MOFA added that it would continue monitoring Morocco’s visa policy toward Taiwanese nationals and “adjust its visa policy for Moroccan nationals accordingly.”
