‘Government Collapse’; PP Says It’s ‘Genuine Alternative’ to End Ceuta Crisis

Rabat – Spain’s main opposition Popular Party (PP) claimed it is a “genuine” alternative to the government, which it accused of inaction in tackling the recent Ceuta crisis.

PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo made his remarks today, describing the Ceuta migration crisis as “unprecedented, given the seriousness of what part of Spain, the autonomous city, is experiencing.”

He referenced the Ceuta mass crossing of July 30, when tens of thousands of migrants attempted to or reached the occupied enclave.

The PP leader claimed the Spanish government is indifferent to “the interests, security, integrity and sovereignty of Spaniards,” alleging that he and his party would be “a genuine alternative” to the situation.

According to Spanish news agency EFE, the politician described what is happening in Ceuta as a “moment of government collapse.”

Feijóo accused Pedro Sánchez’s cabinet of acting against the “nation and against the State, occupying, degrading and disarming it.”

Spanish politicians have also been taking issue with Moroccan officials, who have emphasized Morocco’s sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla.

Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi emphasized Morocco’s firmness in responding to the Ceuta migration crisis and stressed that Morocco’s claims to Ceuta and Melilla remain on the table.

He said the issue is pending, but reiterated Morocco’s sovereignty over the regions.

He also responded to rhetoric against Morocco, especially from Vox and PP, which accuse Morocco of being responsible for the latest mass crossings.

Morocco responded to the claims, emphasizing its recognized role in tackling migration and combating irregular migration and human trafficking.

Morocco, however, urged Spain to shoulder responsibility, stressing that tackling the migration crisis should be based on shared responsibility and not on only one specific party.

Spain’s government also backed Morocco’s role in addressing the recent crisis, emphasizing there is no evidence that points to the accusations against Morocco.

Spain’s Minister of Inclusion, Elma Saiz, reiterated the Spanish government’s position in backing Morocco’s role, rejecting anti-Moroccan rhetoric describing Rabat as a threat to Spain.

She described Morocco as a “reliable partner and a neighboring country.”

Saiz lamented the PP’s stance against Spain and Morocco’s migratory policy, stating that the opposition party’s stance is driven by its alliance with the far right, referring to Vox.

“Are they coming to cooperate and improve things, or take pictures with agitators? There is a context from Génova that complicates the cooperation between administrations, which is essential,” she said.

She also accused the party of using “inflammatory” language against the government, stating that this is not the “attitude of a party of state and with a broad vision.”
