Rabat – Mokhtar Laghzioui was elected president of Morocco’s National Press Council (CNP) on Monday, completing the council’s transition to its new institutional structure under Law No. 09.26.
The election took place during a general assembly chaired by the president of the temporary committee tasked with exercising the CNP’s functions and overseeing the election and appointment of its new members.
Laghzioui secured 11 votes, while Abdellah Bakkali received three. Three members abstained from the vote.
Following his election, the assembly opened nominations for the position of vice president. Hanane Rihab was the sole candidate and received 11 votes. Three members abstained, while another three left the meeting room.
Rihab was subsequently elected vice president of the CNP.
The elections mark the conclusion of the temporary committee’s mandate, which began after Law No. 09.26 on the reorganization of the CNP entered into force.
The committee oversaw the process for electing representatives of professional journalists and selecting representatives of newspaper publishers, as well as organizing the elections and announcing their final results.
The committee said the election of the president and vice president completes the legal and institutional transition, allowing the newly constituted council and its bodies to assume their responsibilities under the new law.
The committee also thanked the institutions and organizations involved in the transition, as well as professional journalists, publishers, and CNP staff, for their contributions throughout the process.
With the election of Laghzioui and Rihab, the CNP now enters a new institutional phase, with its president, vice president, and members assuming the powers and responsibilities assigned to the council under Moroccan law.
