Morocco Elections: Tangier Left Alliance Alleges ‘Ballot Stuffing,’ Demands New Vote

Voting closed nationwide at 7 p.m. after a day marred by fraud claims in Tangier. Provisional results are expected Thursday, followed by coalition talks to form the next government.

Marrakech – The Left Alliance in Tangier condemned Wednesday’s legislative vote in the city as the worst it has seen, alleging fraud at two polling stations and calling for the entire ballot to be scrapped and rerun.

In a statement the party described as “urgent, today, the alliance acknowledged rigging in earlier elections but called this one “the worst and most dangerous ever.” It pointed to stations No. 84 and No. 87 at the Al Qods school, accusing operatives of “ballot stuffing” and the “direct theft of the nation’s will.”

The alliance charged authorities with a “systematic blockade” of party observers to stop them from monitoring, and with targeting journalists to keep them from documenting “the scale of electoral corruption.” Such conduct, it argued, amounts to a “systematic rigging operation” that strips the entire process of legitimacy.

The statement assigned “full political and administrative responsibility” to the wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, the governor of Tangier-Assilah prefecture, and the head of the internal affairs department.

The alliance then set out four positions. It declared an “immediate and complete boycott” of all ongoing monitoring and refused to grant legitimacy to what it called the “farce” of counting results. It demanded that the process be dropped and “restarted from zero” under strict conditions guaranteeing the administration’s neutrality.

It also vowed to track the investigation announced by the King’s prosecutor general at the Tangier Court of Appeal, urging that the female agents of the regional and local lists be heard and that “maximum legal and political penalties” fall on everyone involved “without procrastination.” Finally, it denounced the intimidation of observers and reporters as a “blatant attempt” to cover up the electoral crime and remove the field witness.

The group called on activists, democratic bodies, and journalists to gather at the Unified Socialist Party (PSU)’s headquarters and join a protest sit-in at 7 p.m. in front of the regional wilaya. “No to rigging the popular will. No to giving legitimacy to the farce,” it concluded.

The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) rejected accusations attributed to the party. In a statement from Rabat, it described a “fabricated campaign” and a “political plot” by rivals unsettled by its rising support, denouncing “vile methods” aimed at its candidates.

The dispute centers on Bureau 84, where authorities arrested a man suspected of holding illegal ballots after observers protested and the station closed. A video circulating online showed a transparent box with white envelopes, with fraud claims tied to PAM supporters.

Two prosecutors opened investigations, and police questioned Tangier mayor Mounir Limouri, the PAM campaign director, and list leader Abdellatif Ghalbzouri. No fraud has been judicially established.

The clashes closed a nationwide vote for the 395-seat House of Representatives, the 12th since independence. About 15.8 million voters were registered, and 28 formations competed. Provisional results are expected Thursday.
