Preliminary results in the Rabat-Ocean electoral district show the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) in first place with 7,386 votes, followed by the Justice and Development Party (PJD) with 5,868 votes.
The Left Alliance is third with 3,487 votes, followed by Al Istiqlal and the National Rally of Independents (RNI), according to preliminary data from the Ministry of the Interior.
PAM is also taking the lead in Rabat’s Chellah, followed by PJD, according to preliminary data.
Morocco’s polling stations closed at 7 p.m. with a national turnout rate of 38.02%.
The Ministry of Interior said the voting process took place under normal conditions across all regions, with the exception of a very limited number of isolated cases.
Polling stations began counting and tallying the votes following the closure of the polls.
The Ministry of the Interior announced that it will determine and announce the names of the winning candidates based on the stations’ records established for the local electoral districts and the records of the provincial counting committee for the regional electoral districts.
The PJD’s apparent lead has drawn particular attention given the scale of its 2021 collapse. After winning 125 seats in 2016, the party fell to just 13 seats in 2021, while the RNI emerged first, followed by PAM and Istiqlal.
PJD, however, sees itself coming back stronger, and the party is now taking the lead in several regions.
It remains to be seen which party will secure the largest number of seats and ultimately produce the head of government, who will be tasked with forming the next government.
