Agadir – Moroccan security services arrested a 22-year-old extremist affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) in Tangier, after uncovering indications that he had been preparing to carry out terrorist attacks in Morocco, the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) announced today.
The arrest took place Friday following intelligence gathered by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), which helped judicial police identify and detain the suspect.
During searches linked to the case, investigators recovered documents describing techniques for cyber infiltration, alongside electronic equipment and materials that raised suspicions of possible bomb-making preparations, the BCIJ said.
The seized equipment included a modified mobile phone connected to electrical wires, batteries, welding tools, adhesive tape, electrical circuit breakers, and protective welding goggles. Officers also found solid and liquid chemical substances that authorities suspect could have been intended for making explosives.
Specialists will examine the chemical substances to determine their exact composition and clarify why the suspect had them in his possession.
According to preliminary findings, the suspect had allegedly taken initial steps toward carrying out terrorist operations, including conducting preliminary experiments to prepare explosive devices.
Following his arrest, authorities transferred the suspect to the BCIJ, where he remains in police custody as investigators pursue the case under the supervision of the public prosecutor responsible for terrorism-related cases.
The ongoing investigation seeks to establish the nature and scope of the suspected plans and determine whether the suspect had links to other individuals or networks in Morocco or abroad.
