King Mohammed VI received Head of Government Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, who is tasked with forming the new government, at the Royal Palace in Rabat on Wednesday.
During the meeting, El Mansouri briefed the monarch on the progress made in the government formation process, according to the statement.
In the meeting, the monarch expressed his wishes for success and good fortune to El Mansouri in her mission, emphasizing that the next phase requires comprehensive mobilization and serious, responsible government performance in view of the scale of the stakes, challenges, and expectations at all levels.
King Mohammed VI appointed El Mansouri following the September 23 legislative elections.
The monarch appointed El Mansouri after the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), of which El Mansouri is the coordinator, won 97 seats in the elections of September 23.
“The work will start today,” the head of government said after her appointment. “We will begin with internal consultations within the party, and then consultations with all political parties, so that, God willing, as soon as possible, we can present to His Majesty our proposal for a government that meets the expectations of the King and the expectations of citizens.”
Following the appointment, El Mansouri began holding extensive political consultations with several parties represented in Parliament.
On Monday, El Mansouri reached an agreement to form a government majority comprising four political parties: PAM, the Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS).
Now the parties are discussing ministries, and the meeting will be followed by the announcement of a new government in the coming days.
Tuesday also marked the election of the new speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives.
Ahmed Touizi, also from PAM, was voted in as the new speaker with 220 votes out of 279.
Touizi will replace Rachid Talbi El Alami, who served as the speaker of the House in the Aziz Akhannouch government.
