Rabat – Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi is expected to undergo an MRI scan on Monday, after suffering a suspected hamstring injury during Panathinaikos’ 5-1 victory over Asteras Tripolis in the Greek Super League on Sunday.
According to Greek outlet Sport24, Panathinaikos informed journalists that the initial medical assessment indicated an injury affecting the biceps femoris, one of the hamstring muscles at the back of the thigh.
The club’s preliminary assessment suggests the problem may not be minor, although further examinations are required to determine its severity and how long Ounahi could be sidelined.
Greek public broadcaster ERT Sports also reported that the early indications were concerning, with an MRI scheduled for Monday afternoon to establish the extent of the injury.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury in the opening stages of Sunday’s encounter at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. He went down in the 16th minute while attempting to reach the ball and was unable to continue.
Ounahi received medical assistance before leaving the pitch on a stretcher in the 19th minute. Andreas replaced him.
Panathinaikos confirmed the midfielder’s early departure in its official match report but did not provide details about the nature or severity of the injury.
The Greek club went on to secure a convincing 5-1 victory over Asteras, but Ounahi’s condition remains a concern ahead of its upcoming fixtures.
The injury also raises questions over the midfielder’s availability for Morocco’s next international matches.
The Atlas Lions are scheduled to face Niger twice in November as part of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, with the first match taking place on November 13 at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.
The second encounter is scheduled for November 17 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Ounahi has remained an important member of Morocco’s midfield under head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, and his fitness will be of interest to the national team’s coaching staff ahead of the international window.
No recovery timeline has been confirmed as of now, and the results of Monday’s MRI are expected to provide a clearer picture of his condition.
