Rabat – The Policy Center for the New South’s  (PCNS) annual report on Africa’s geopolitical situation was presented yesterday at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat.

The report was revealed during the eighth edition of the African Peace and Security Annual Conference (APSACO), which took place from June 10 to June 11.

The chosen focus for this year, “Mediation in African Internal Conflicts,” highlighted the critical necessity of devising robust strategies to address the persistent and evolving security issues throughout the continent.

The PCNS report provides a multidisciplinary perspective essential for understanding the paradigms governing Africa’s geopolitical situation.

It portrays Africa as it is, from political transitions to ongoing crises, passing through the complex socio-cultural regional dynamics, before articulating a vision and outlining aspirations for its future.

Overseen by Abdelhak Basu, a prominent researcher at PCNS, the report offered a comprehensive analysis of the African situation throughout 2023.

It delved into political transitions, regional tensions, and the repercussions of global crises on the continent.

Africa contends with more than 35 armed conflicts and multiple disruptive political events, including recent coups d’état in the Sahel and escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa. In this context, there lies an increasing pressure on mediators to quell hostilities, resolve disputes, reinstate peace and stability, and guarantee the continuous provision of humanitarian aid.

Basu mentioned in a statement to MAP that this edition of the center’s report includes a new chapter titled “Africa and the World,” shedding light on the continent’s international relations.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the Geneva Center for Geostrategic Monitoring, Imane Shaanabi, also spoke on the report, noting that it presents insights that monitor Africa’s geopolitical situation.

She added that the goal is to translate them into strategies and action plans for the continent’s future.

According to the event’s press release, the conference’s 2024 edition, a product of the efforts of many experts from different African countries, analyzes various dimensions of the continent’s geopolitical landscape and promotes effective conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts.

Deputy Secretary-General Shaanabi mentioned to MAP that throughout the eighth edition of this seminar, the meetings facilitated the development of numerous ideas by providing opportunities for input from individuals of diverse backgrounds.

This year’s APSACO aimed to highlight the urgent need to find effective solutions to current and emerging security challenges on the continent, as stated in the press release.

The event also underscored the importance of dialogue and negotiation as fundamental approaches to achieve lasting peace.

Created in 2014, the PCNS is a Moroccan think tank dedicated to enhancing economic and social public policies that challenge Morocco and the broader African region as vital components of the global South.
