Rabat – Civil protection units in Tetouan evacuated 13 people from their inundated homes on the outskirts of the Sahatryin area on Sunday.
The operation came in response to the floods triggered by heavy rainfall pounding the region.
According to a report from Le360, civil protection personnel were mobilized in the early morning hours and were deployed to various affected areas within and beyond the city limits.
The suburbs of Sahatryin Ain Lahsen, situated along the Tangier-Tetouan road, were particularly hard-hit, with citizens trapped inside their homes.
Using a range of resources, including boats, ambulances, and trucks, along with specialized equipment, the civil protection teams executed a daring rescue mission. They managed to reach stranded residents and transported them to safety.
Meanwhile, the floods extended beyond Sahatryin, affecting major thoroughfares and disrupting traffic flow.
The airport roundabout, Martil Road, and the route from M’diq to Fnideq were among the areas worst hit by inundation, causing significant delays and congestion, Le360 report.
As the floodwaters surged, neighborhoods in the outskirts of Martil, Chefchaouen Road, and Tangier Road also grappled with rising water levels.
The heavy rainfall and risk of flood prompted authorities to suspend classes in a number of remote schools in the Tangier-Tetouan region.
Director of the Regional Academy for Education and Training in the Tangier-Tetouan-Hoceima region, Mohamed Aouaj, confirmed that only schools located in the most isolated areas would be suspended.
