Morocco Revises Teaching Exam Rules, Lifts Age Cap from 30 to 35

Rabat – The Ministry of National Education has officially raised the age limit for candidates applying to Morocco’s teacher qualification exams from 30 to 35 years.

The decision, announced on the ministry’s official Facebook page, comes ahead of the entrance examinations for the regional centers for education and training professions, scheduled for November 22.

Registration for the exams will take place online from October 30 to November 13 at 4:30 p.m.

The revision follows mounting demands over the past three years from university graduates, unions, and members of parliament, who criticized the 2021 decision to cap the age requirement at 30.

The restriction sparked widespread protests from young graduates, who argue that it excludes thousands of qualified candidates and narrows access to the teaching profession.

Education Minister Mohamed Saad Berrada said earlier this month in the House of Representatives that his department had begun reassessing the age cap in response to these concerns.

“We initiated an evaluation two months ago after receiving numerous requests from parliament and unions,” Berrada explained, noting that the earlier age restriction aimed to improve recruitment quality and ensure longer teaching careers.

While the ministry initially defended the 30-year cap as part of efforts to “make teaching professions more attractive” and strengthen training pathways, the revised limit signals a more inclusive approach that acknowledges the realities of Morocco’s job market and graduate unemployment.

The ministry confirmed that the 2025 recruitment exams will remain open only to Moroccan nationals who meet the required physical and moral conditions and hold a relevant bachelor’s degree, either in education, basic studies, or professional disciplines.

Whether this change will lead to broader reforms in the recruitment and training process remains to be seen, as Morocco continues to address challenges in teacher shortages and education quality across the country.
