Rabat – The Permanent Mission of Liberia to the United Nations has strongly condemned the recent attack targeting the southern Moroccan city of Es-Smara, for which the Polisario Front has claimed responsibility.
In a statement, the West African country denounced the targeting of civilians, aligning itself with concerns expressed by members of the United Nations Security Council, the MINURSO, and the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura.
The Liberian mission stressed that, as negotiations continue between the parties involved in the Western Sahara dispute, such attacks are “unfortunate” and undermine efforts to advance a political solution. It also called for a swift return to the ceasefire, in line with the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025).
According to the statement, acts of violence of this nature threaten regional stability and risk derailing progress toward a peaceful settlement, including ongoing discussions around Morocco’s autonomy plan under its sovereignty.
Liberia’s position comes in the wake of similar condemnations from several international actors, including Belgium, United States, France, UAE, UK, and the European Union, all of which have condemned the attack and reiterated support for United Nations-led efforts to reach a lasting political solution.
At the United Nations, the response was equally forceful. UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told reporters on Thursday that MINURSO had “expressed deep concern over rocket firing in civilian areas” and urged all parties to avoid acts that could jeopardize the political process.
The attack on Es-Smara has further intensified diplomatic attention on the Western Sahara issue, at a time when international support for Morocco’s autonomy plan continues to expand. A growing number of countries view the plan as a serious and credible framework for resolving the decades-long dispute under UN auspices.
