Stuttgart – Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner private military company and former chief of Russian mercenary group Wagner, is presumed dead following a fatal plane crash.
The incident occurred northwest of Moscow and presumably resulted in the loss of all 10 individuals on board, among them Prigozhin.
The aircraft, identified as an Embraer Legacy 600, had departed from Moscow and was en route to St. Petersburg before crashing near the village of Kuzhenkino in the Tver region.
The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency confirmed Prigozhin’s presence on the flight. The development is significant given the attention that has surrounded Prigozhin’s activities and his role in the Wagner organization.
Prigozhin gained notoriety for leading a short-lived rebellion against the Russian military earlier this year. Despite initial charges related to the rebellion, they were eventually dropped, permitting him to find refuge in Belarus and intermittently appear in Russia.
The crash took place amid reports of the dismissal of a high-ranking Air Force general associated with Prigozhin, adding an additional layer of interest to the incident.
The aircraft, an Embraer Legacy 600, had reportedly taken off from Moscow and lost communication while airborne. Social media posts showed images of the wreckage, with one video indicating the aircraft’s descent was uncontrolled.
Russian authorities have initiated an investigation into the crash, and further information is expected to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
If confirmed, Prighozin’s death will likely have implications for the ongoing dynamics involving his connections and the Wagner private military company.
