RS Berkane forward Paul Valère Bassene is facing disciplinary proceedings after the National Professional Football League officially referred his case to the Central Disciplinary Committee following his controversial celebration during Wednesday’s Botola Pro clash against Raja Casablanca.
The league announced on Thursday that it had filed a formal complaint against the Senegalese striker over what it described as inappropriate behavior following his winning goal in RS Berkane’s victory over Raja at the Mohammed V Stadium. The incident occurred during a match played as part of the 22nd round of the Botola Pro Inwi.
For its part, the decision comes amid widespread reactions from supporters and football observers, with the player’s celebration becoming one of the most discussed topics in Moroccan football over the past 24 hours.
In its official statement, the league emphasized that the move reflects its commitment to enforcing the regulations governing national competitions and promoting discipline, respect and sportsmanship across Moroccan football.
While the disciplinary process is now underway, the committee is expected to review the case before determining whether sanctions will be imposed on the player.
Bassene’s apology
The development comes shortly after Bassene publicly apologized for his actions.
In a statement posted on his Instagram account, the RS Berkane attacker expressed regret to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, his club, Raja Casablanca and supporters who felt offended by the gesture.
Bassene insisted that his celebration was never intended to disrespect anyone and was instead an emotional reaction after scoring a decisive goal in a high-pressure encounter.
“I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for my celebration after scoring the goal in the match between RS Berkane and Raja Casablanca, which some considered excessive. I had absolutely no intention of offending anyone with my actions,” the player wrote.
The Senegalese forward explained that the gesture was meant to symbolize determination and fighting spirit on the pitch rather than provoke opponents or supporters.
However, he acknowledged that many people interpreted the celebration differently and accepted responsibility for the controversy that followed.
“Football is first and foremost a sport of respect, and I shouldn’t have let the excitement of the moment get the better of me in that way,” Bassene added.
The 25-year-old concluded his message by reaffirming his commitment to fair play and promising to be more careful with his conduct in future matches.
Despite the apology, the disciplinary process will continue, with Moroccan football authorities now tasked with assessing whether the player’s actions breached competition regulations.
