Rabat – Harry Kane revealed he is eyeing a future as an NFL kicker, noting that playing in Major League Soccer first could smooth the transition.
While Kane previously mentioned interest in golf and American football, the 33-year-old is now taking the NFL prospect much more seriously, stressing any move to the U.S. is still years away.
“That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously,” Kane said at England’s training camp, according to Reuters.
“It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way,” he added.
The England international believes his experience taking penalties gives him a natural head start as an NFL kicker, though he acknowledged that switching sports will still require serious preparation.
“I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure and technique. In terms of training, I would be closer to that more than any other sport,” Kane explained.
“Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two maybe with the seasons,” the striker added.
Switching from football to American football is not unprecedented. Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey was originally selected by Toronto FC in the 2017 MLS draft before transitioning to the NFL, despite never playing a first-team match in football.
Similarly, Detroit Lions kicker Jake Bates built his athletic foundation in college football. Both players demonstrate that top-tier kicking skills can carry over successfully to the gridiron.
For now, Kane remains fully focused on football. Negotiations over a new contract with Bayern Munich are progressing well, with an official announcement expected soon.
