Rabat – Morocco’s national police department, the General Directorate of National Territorial Surveillance (DGSN), has reported unearthing the human remains belonging to a victim thought to have been murdered in 1999 in Boukhnouz, on the outskirts of Laroui, a city in the province of Nador.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the police department explained that it identified the burial location of human bones inside the ruins of an abandoned dwelling in Boukhnouz. The location was previously a stronghold of an extremist group.
Crime scene experts, in cooperation with the Office of Health Preservation, and other government agencies extracted the human remains. Authorities suspect that the bones belong to the victim of a premeditated murder that took place more than two decades ago.
The place where these human bones were hidden was identified in the context of an investigation into a suspected murder that had occurred in 1999. The victim is a male who disappeared in the same year in “mysterious” circumstances involving an extremist criminal group.
The statement further indicates that the doctor in charge of the Office of Health Preservation in Nador, as well as the chief physician of the medical department of the Hassani Hospital in the same city, were assigned to extract DNA samples and identify the victim.
The investigation is a joint operation by the Public Prosecutor’s office in Rabat, the National Brigade of the Judicial Police, and the DGSN.
