Rabat – King Mohammed VI will deliver a speech to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the Green March today.

A statement from the Ministry of Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery said that the speech will be broadcast on radio and national television stations at 8:30 pm today.

November 6 marks the anniversary of the Green March, an event that marked a turning point in Morocco’s history.

The Green March took place in 1975 with the participation of over 350,000 Moroccans who marched peacefully to the Sahara desert to regain sovereignty over the territory. The march was at the request of the late King Hassan II, who asked citizens to participate in the event against Spain’s colonization.

“We have to do one thing dear people and that is to undertake a peaceful march from the north, the east, the west to the south. It behooves us to act as one man in order to join the Sahara,” he said in an address aired on national television and radio stations in October 1975.

King Mohammed VI delivers a speech on this national day to pay tribute to the late King’s efforts and bravery against colonialism as well as to express Morocco’s determination to continue to defend its interests and territorial integrity.

In his 2021 speech on the anniversary of the Green March, King Mohammed VI  recalled Morocco’s firm position, emphasizing that “the Moroccanness of the Sahara is an immutable and indisputable fact, be it on account of history, legitimacy, the strong will of the Moroccan people or broad recognition by the international community.”

He also celebrated the growing and tangible support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, extending his thanks to the US for its decision to recognize Morocco’s full sovereignty over Western Sahara.

“This is a natural consequence of the continuous support provided by previous US Administrations and an illustration of the United States’ constructive role in the settlement of this issue,” the monarch said.
