Rabat – Morocco’s Government Council announced on Thursday the extension of the state of emergency for another month until May 31. Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch chaired the cabinet council on Thursday in Rabat.
Morocco extends the state of emergency on a monthly basis as part of its approach to counter COVID-19.
The extension of the state of emergency allows Morocco to take measures in the case of any change in the epidemiological situation.
Under the state of emergency, Morocco can either put further restrictions or ease COVID-19 measures.
The state of emergency has been in place since March 2020, when Morocco announced the measure after the outbreak of a few COVID-19 cases in the North African country.
The epidemiological situation is stable in Morocco following the significant drop in the number of COVID-19 cases compared to a few months earlier.
On Wednesday, Morocco confirmed 51 COVID cases and two death deaths.
Active COVID-19 cases are estimated at 409, a low number compared to 2021 and 2020.
Since March 2020, Morocco has reported 1,164,825 COVID-19 cases and 16,068 fatalities linked to the virus. More than 1.1 million people have recovered from the virus..
Morocco has been also urging citizens to engage in the vaccination campaign to try to reach herd immunity.
To date, Morocco has fully vaccinated 23,283,287 people.
The number of people who took the booster dose is estimated at 6,247,363.
