Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) made on Wednesday what it described as a record drug bust, aborting an attempt to traffick 31 tons and 197 kilograms of Cannabis in Tanger.
The DGSN, in coordination with the police in Beni Maqada in Tanger, northern Morocco, found the drugs stuffed inside plastic fruit and vegetables, according to an official statement.
The police force carried out the operation in a warehouse located in the “Bdriyoun” area next to the “Rabat Road” on the outskirts of Tanger, the statement said.
Following an inspection of the warehouse, the police seized a large cooling trailer storing dozens of Cannabis packs.
The police found cannabis stuffed inside plastic vegetables and fruit indicating that the trafficking network was planning to traffick the drugs among agricultural produce, according to the DGSN.
Police also arrested a 61-year-old male suspect who has a criminal record. They believe he could be involved in an international drug trafficking network.
The police force delivered the seized drugs to the relevant customs authorities, while the suspects remain under police custody as the police continue investigations under the supervision of the Tanger public attorney.
The investigation will seek to identify the full list of suspects involved in the drug trafficking operation as well as assess the national and international extension of the criminal network.
Under the supervision of the judicial police officers from the Tanger region, the drug bust involved the anti-gangster squad, a regional police intervention squad, and the synotechnical brigade, the statement added.
This operation is in line with the DGSN’s continuous efforts to dismantle criminal networks active on the national and international levels, including the ones involved in trafficking drugs.
