Rabat – Days after the launch of Malta’s consulate in Morocco, Sofia Bennani has been appointed president of the recently formed Morocco-Malta joint cooperation council.
The Morocco-Malta Cooperation Council (MMCC) launched on February 23 in Casablanca and will be spearheaded by Bennani, a Ph.D. holder in management.
As president of the MMCC, Bennani will draw on her expertise in strategic partnerships to contribute to the proliferation of Morocco-Malta cooperation spanning economy, culture, education.
With over nine years of experience in senior positions, Bennani started her career in 2013 as a general manager for the digital consulting firm InSource. In 2017, she became CEO Advisor for a Moroccan-based holding group before launching her own sustainable development venture in 2019.
Prior to the launching the Morocco-Malta Council, the two countries already shared good diplomatic relations. The Republic of Malta announced plans to inaugurate a consulate in Morocco’s Casablanca last month, aiming to cement future cooperation with Morocco.
In the days leading to the opening of the consulate, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita met with Malta’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo in Rabat. The two officials concluded their meeting by announcing the opening of the consulate.
Following the announcement, Bartolo thanked Morocco for supporting Malta’s candidacy for the UN Security Council (2023-2014). “Building on their 50-year relationship, Morocco and Malta welcome the inauguration tomorrow of the consulate in Casablanca,” he said. On the diplomatic front, Malta supports and recognizes Morocco’s efforts to find a permanent solution to the Western Sahara conflict.
“We recognize Morocco’s efforts within the framework of the UN process for a mutually acceptable solution to the dispute over the Sahara in a region that does not need more problems,” Bartolo stressed.
