Rabat – The Morocco-led Maghreb Association for Peace, Cooperation, and Development officially commenced activities yesterday, according to a press release.

Association members made the announcement during a press conference on February 18, in the northeastern Moroccan city of Oujda.

The founding purpose behind the creation of the Maghreb Association for Peace, Cooperation, and Development is to anchor peace in the Maghreb region and pave the way for building a regional union to serve the shared needs and aspirations of the Maghreb people, explained the association’s press release.

Setting peace as a priority, the Maghreb association stands against all forms of conflicts including armed conflicts in the region, as well as mass deportations, noted the press statement. The association also said it stands for citizens’ right to lead a peaceful life within the Maghreb region.

Adding to the peacekeeping mission, the Maghreb Association for Peace, Cooperation, and Development will actively work to foster cooperation and strengthen economic ties between Maghreb countries

During the group’s inaugural press conference, association representatives announced key members of the association including Oualid Kabir as president of the association, Hamdi El Tayib as secretary-general, and Khalid El Ouassi as budget secretary.

By organizing their first event on February 18, the association sought to give a commemorative nod to the 33rd anniversary of the creation of the Maghreb Union.

The union, which was created on  February 17, 1989, on the sidelines of the Marrakech summit, has unfortunately failed to reach its goals due to a myriad of reasons, the association president said in the press conference.

“Our aim today is not to look back at previous calamities, or point fingers. We want to free Maghreb nations from past mistakes, and to hold on to hope for the creation of a Union despite persisting challenges,” Kabir concluded.
