Rabat – Morocco ranks 80th out of 163 countries in the 2022 Positive Peace Index. The nation features among the countries with a “high level of positive peace.”

“Positive Peace” refers to the attitudes, institutions, and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies. The higher a country ranks in the index, the most likely it can achieve and sustain high levels of peace.

According to the latest report of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Morocco scored 3.177 points (the closer the score is to zero, the higher the level of positive peace is considered), landing on the 80th position, ahead of Algeria (96th) and Egypt (114th).

Although the kingdom’s ranking was seven places lower compared to last year, it remains in the category of countries with a high positive peace.

As for the eight pillars of the ranking, based on the Global Peace Index 2021, Morocco scored 3.29 points for governance, 3.43 points for low levels of corruption, and 3.63 points for its good business environment.

The country also scored 3.01 points for the equitable distribution of resources, 3.27 regarding the acceptance of the rights of others, 2.26 for the free flow of information, 3.24 for the high levels of human capital, and 3.11 for enjoying good relations with neighbors.

Globally, Sweden ranks first with 1.228 points, followed by Denmark, Finland, Norway, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the bottom of the ranking goes to the Central African Republic (160th), Yemen (161st), South Sudan (162nd), and Somalia (163rd).

The most peaceful countries in the world perform strongly on all the aforementioned pillars and are more likely to maintain stability, adapt, and recover from shocks.

In the MENA region, the top three places go to Israel (34th globally), the UAE (37th), and Kuwait (46th).

Meanwhile, Morocco comes 8th in the region behind Saudi Arabia (79th globally), Bahrain (72th), Oman (55th), Tunisia (54th), and Qatar (49th).

Sudan comes 18th in the region and 155th globally, followed by Syria (157th) and Yemen (161st).

On the African continent, the first place goes to Mauritius (43rd), followed by Botswana (48th), and South Africa (58th).

IEP underlined that the overall score of the positive peace index has improved by 2.4% since 2009.

“Eight out of the nine world regions improved in Positive Peace from 2009 to 2020, with North America being the only exception,” the report noted, detailing that 126 countries showed progress in the index, while 36 others deteriorated in the score.
