A statement from local authorities in Chefchaouen province said on Tuesday that some fake campaigns are being promoted on social media to collect in-kind donations for little Rayan’s family.

The statement noted that these campaigns are taking place both inside and outside Morocco.

Under the pretext of collecting cash or in-kind donations for the benefit of the family of the deceased child, organizers of these scams are trying to exploit the tragic death of five-year-old Rayan Oram, who died  after falling into a well in the Chefchaouen province.

The statement condemned these fake campaigns, noting that the  first chapter of Morocco’s law relating to the solicitation of public charity establishes standards that control and codify the processes of collecting public donations.

The many initiatives aimed at collecting donations and delivering relief are all structured to follow a specific procedure in order to protect the individual who is being helped, in this case Rayan’s family.

The statement further noted that Rayan’s family is aware of these malicious behaviors and refuses people exploiting their son’s tragic death.

The statement concluded by denouncing the organization of such fund-collection campaigns as being against the Moroccan people’s “authentic traditions” of generosity and solidarity.

Rayan fell into a 32-meter well on February 1. Due to the narrowness of the shaft, it took rescue teams four days of restless and courageous struggle to pull the five-year-old child out of the well.

But the boy was pronounced dead when rescuers finally reached him, and news of his tragic death generated an avalanche of messages of support and condolences from all corners of the globe.

While Rayan’s tragic story garnered international solidarity, some individuals and websites seized the opportunity to make financial profit off the child’s plight.
