Fez – Morocco’s National Motorway Company (ADM), the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and the MAScIR Foundation (Moroccan Foundation for Advanced Science, Innovation And Research) signed on February 2, an agreement on a research project aiming to improve safety on national highways.

The parties signatory to the agreement explained that “the project consists of developing a decision-making solution for processing and using data from accident databases, traffic information and the various components of the infrastructure and its equipment.”

The project is also set to “integrate meteorological data and other risk factors related to accidents” to give recommendations concerning road management, they added.

Artificial Intelligence will subsequently be used to examine the data collected from various sources. The findings will be included into a system of road safety recommendations, allowing ADM to reduce the amount of accidents. The project’s goal is to improve highway user safety.

This project is in keeping with ADM’s strategy, which focuses on the safety of motorway traffic. By allowing well-known players in research and development to participate, the ADM aims to strengthen the use of innovative technology.

To promote and accelerate the adoption of digital solutions, ADM has signed various technical cooperation agreements with foreign partners that are leaders in the field of electronic toll collection.

This agreement also reaffirms the member institutions’ commitment to work together for the common benefit and the advancement of R&D in Morocco.

Increasing safety is an important goal for the ADM. In the first five months of 2021, Morocco’s Agency for Road Safety (NARSA) last year reported 1,193 deaths, up 36.7% in 2020.

However, the proportion remains relatively low, as the number of accident-related deaths fell by 8.1%  in 2021 compared to 2019.
