Rabat – The Ministry of Health and Social Protection said that Omicron cases represent 95% of infections in Morocco.

The Delta variant does not exceed 5% of the total number of infections, the ministry warned.

Mouad Lamrabet, the coordinator of the National Center for Public Emergency at the health ministry, said that the third wave of the pandemic has been ongoing from January 3-17.

The percentage of cases continues to rise, Lamrabet said, stressing that the speed of the increase is no longer at the same pace.

He said that the rate of rising cases during the first weeks of this wave reached more than 150%.

Lamrabet warned that the pandemic is close to reaching its peak. This is indicated by the rate of new cases admitted to intensive care rising significantly.

The death rate also recorded an increase of 16.1% after the country recorded 65 new deaths in the last week.

He said that the percentage is not expected to increase in a short time even with the high rate of positive cases.

“But it needs an interval of time that may reach two weeks,” he highlighted.

Emphasizing the importance of vaccination, Lamrabet cautioned that 70% of deaths concern unvaccinated people.

He said 23% of people who died only received one dose, while 7% of the COVID-19 fatalities did not receive the booster dose.

The health official called on all citizens to receive full vaccinations as part of the efforts to further counter the pandemic.
