Fez – Morocco’s head of government and Agadir mayor Aziz Akhannouch called to check on the Belgian tourist, one of the victims of last week’s Tiznit incident, according to a statement from Agadir’s municipal council.

During the phone call, the head of government expressed solidarity with the patient, denouncing the heinous act that had her injured. He also wished the patient a speedy recovery, reassuring that local authorities will do their utmost to watch over her state of health in the coming days until her full recovery.

In addition to the phone call from Akhannouch, the Belgian national also received more comforting words and reassurances from Agadir’s vice mayor Mustapha Bouderka and Souss-Massa Wali Ahmed Hajji.

The two local officials paid a visit to the Belgian tourist at the Hassan II Hospital of Agadir, where the medical staff reassured them that the patient’s medical state is very stable.

On January 15, police in Agadir arrested a 31-year-old for the intentional murder of a French national in Tiznit, a town in the Souss-Massa region.

The General Directorate of National Security (DSGN) said in a statement that the arrest was made after a surveillance camera showed the suspect fatally stabbing the victim with a knife before fleeing the scene.

The police arrested the suspect in Agadir, where he also attempted to physically assault two tourists in a cafe near Agadir’s beach. One of the victims, the Belgian national now staying at Agadir’s Hassan II Hospital, was badly wounded and transferred to the hospital to receive the necessary care.

The police put the perpetrator into custody for further investigations to shed light on the circumstances and motives of his actions.

Several sources, including preliminary investigations by the Agadir police, have ruled out terrorism motives as the suspect had been admitted to the psychiatry department at the Hassan I Hospital in Tiznit for one month last year after suffering from mental disorders.

The suspect will be charged with the intentional homicide of a 79-year-old French woman in a market. He will also be sued for the murder attempt on the Belgian woman.
