Rabat – STMicroelectronics will open a new production line dedicated to producing electronic chips for American car manufacturer Tesla in the Moroccan city of Bouskoura, according to reports.

The ceremony will be attended by the CEO of the multinational STMicroelectronics, among others.

Moulay Hafid Elalamy, Morocco’s Minister of Industry announced two weeks ago that STMicroelectronics had won a contract to manufacture microchips for Tesla, which he called “the most important piece, the central connector, and the brain of a Tesla.”

This comes in the midst of a new business strategy for STMicroelectronics, as the French-Italian multinational corporation aims to reposition itself in the automobile industry.

As part of this strategy, the company will equip Renault’s electric and hybrid cars with components until 2026.

The automobile industry had been suffering from an extreme shortage of electronic chips during the pandemic. The sector suffered a lot from its dependence on Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC.

Many reckon that this has led companies to seriously consider diversifying their sources of chips.

Morocco has recently been trying to up its efforts in employing sustainable green energy sources. The city of Benguerir recently unveiled a production line to manufacture charging stations for electric vehicles.
