Rabat – A coast guard vessel of Morocco’s Royal Navy on a patrol mission aborted a drug trafficking operation in the Mediterranean on Sunday.

A military source told Maghreb Arab Press (MAP) on July 26 that a suspect was carrying drug cargo consisting of 22 plastic cans and 14 other bags loaded with cannabis on a speedboat.

Authorities recovered the drug cargo, estimated at more than one ton, approximately 15 kilometers from Morocco’s northern coastline.

Morocco’s Royal Navy handed the drug smuggler and his contraband over to the Royal Gendarmerie for procedures and investigation.

The operation is part of Morocco’s approach to combat national and international drug trafficking.

All of Morocco’s security units, including the Royal Navy, the national police, and the Royal Gendarmerie collaborate to combat drug trafficking.

In 2019, Morocco’s national police (DGSN) seized 179,657 tons of cannabis and its derivatives. The number represents an increase of 127 tons compared to 2018.

Police also seized hard drugs, including 542,455 kilograms of cocaine, 7,196 kilograms of heroin, and 1,407,451 psychotropic pills.

In addition to DGSN operations, Moroccan customs seized 119 tons of cannabis resin and 690,000 psychotropic tablets last year.
