Rabat – The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) announced on July 24 that families are allowed to bring food to relatives in prisons across Morocco, starting the second day of Eid Al Adha.
The DGAPR said the decision takes into account the “exceptional conditions, which require the taking of a series of precautions and preventive measures to deal with the spread” of COVID-19 inside prisons.
The statement said permission is valid during the days programmed for each penitentiary establishment.
The prison administration warned that it will only allow families to hand over food baskets for their relatives but will not allow face to face visits.

Families are not allowed to bring money, clothes, or other objects.
The DGAPR explained that the decision is part of the special Eid Al Adha measures, given the importance of the event and its impact both on prisoners and their families.
“Prisons will offer all the necessary facilities for residents to contact their families to inform them of the scheduled appointment and the conditions necessary to bring the basket,” the DGAPR explained.
The statement called on all families and inmates to seriously adhere to the operation to contribute to the success of the preventive measures for the safety of the prison population.
In May, the DGAPR unveiled an action plan to combat the spread of COVID-19.
New detainees are subject to medical examination to confirm their COVD-19 status.
Prison administrations will also make sure vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, women, minors, and sick people do not come into contact with virus carriers.
DGAPR announced recently that family visits are set to gradually resume this month.
Measures, however, are subject to change given the evolution of the pandemic in the country.
Morocco confirms 18,264 COVID-19 cases, including 15,872 recoveries, and 292 deaths.
