Join on Telegram Rabat – A Royal Air Maroc flight has landed in Beni Mellal airport in central Morocco, bringing a group of 152 Moroccans who had been stranded in Egypt.
Morocco’s Embassy in Egypt organized the trip as part of Morocco’s repatriation campaign that seeks to bring home 32,000 Moroccans who have been stranded abroad since March due to COVID-19 border closures.
The repatriation operation from Egypt benefited Moroccan citizens holding short stay visas, and others in vulnerable situations, including sick and elderly people.
The list of returnees includes two infants.
Maghreb Arab press (MAP) said that Beni Mellal airport has welcomed 312 returning Moroccans since the repatriation operation kicked off.
Authorities bussed the returnees to several hotel establishments in Beni Mellal for a nine-day quarantine period as part of a medical monitoring protocol necessary to ensure that the repatriated citizens are not carrying COVID-19.
Morocco’s ambassador to Cairo Ahmed Tazi told MAP the operation to repatriate Moroccans stranded in Egypt took place in “good conditions” and in full respect of the preventive health measures.
On July 1, Morocco repatriated a group of 150 stranded Moroccans from France.
On June 30, Moroccans stranded in Japan and Turkey were able to return home.
The repatriations are part of the operation that the government scheduled to bring back citizens from 17 countries.
The country is also set to bring back citizens from other countries including Germany and the Gulf countries.
A source told Morocco World News that the North African country is set to start bringing its stranded citizens from Canada on July 4.
The government has not yet announced a date for the repatriation of citizens from the US.
